Gabriel Orozco was born in Jalapa, Mexico, in 1962. He attended art school in Mexico City and Madrid, and currently lives and works in Paris, New York and Mexico City.
Like many contemporary artists, Orozco travels regularly and his practice evolves through his experiences of different cultures and places. His work often explores the potential of everyday situations and materials. Through photographs, objects and ephemeral actions, Orozco makes poetic alterations to the everyday with the effect of activating the viewer's imagination.
Double tail 2003 is from a recent group of sculptures executed using polyurethane foam, a non-recyclable material regularly used for packaging. In the work, the disposable material is transformed into a delicate form that evokes a swooping bird or leaping fish.
