Australia's Indigenous artists work across a range of media including fibre and textiles, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, painting, as well as film, photography, and new media.
Queensland's Indigenous artists include some of the most respected in Australia. Indigenous peoples live in many different cultural environments in Queensland ― in remote traditional communities, the rural towns of the central west, and the urban centres of the eastern coast. Their vibrant cultural practices are comprehensively represented in the Gallery's Collection.
A number of important Indigenous Australian art exhibitions have been presented by the Gallery, including 'Balance 1990: View, Visions, Influences', 'Emily Kame Kngwarreye ― Alhalkere ― Paintings from Utopia', 'Urban Dingo: The Art and Life of Lin Onus 1948-1996', and 'Story Place: Indigenous Art of Cape York and the Rainforest' in 2003.
The Gallery regularly changes the works on display to ensure visitors have the opportunity to view a wide variety of works from the Collection. The online interactive resource, Design your own tour, includes images and information on some of the art works currently on display. |
