The Queensland Art Gallery's collection of international art includes almost 3000 items, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, decorative art and furniture, photographs, installations, videos and films. Consisting of mainly British and European works from the fourteenth to the twentieth century, the collection also includes some important works by twentieth-century American artists.
Highlights include works by Venetian painter Tintoretto and Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens. The transition to modernity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century is traced by Edgar Degas's impressionist work Trois danseuses à la classe de danse (Three dancers at a dancing class) c.1888-90, Pablo Picasso's seated nude study La Belle Hollandaise 1905, and the expressionist energy of Chaim Soutine's L'homme aux rubans (Man with ribbons) 1921-22.
An internationally significant group of Fluxus works was donated by Italian collector and publisher Francesco Conz in the 1990s. This represents the most substantial collection of Fluxus art in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Gallery regularly changes the works on display to ensure visitors have the opportunity to view a wide variety of works from the Collection. The online interactive resource, Design your own tour, includes images and information on some of the art works currently on display. |
