Guidelines for conduct of visitors

The Queensland Art Gallery's Collection consists of over 12 000 works of art. To preserve these and art works on loan to the Gallery, we ask that students (and other group visitors) observe the following guidelines for conduct:

On arrival at the Gallery, you will be asked by a Gallery Services Officer to leave backpacks, large  bags, umbrellas and other bulky items in the foyer cloakroom.
Please leave large or bulky items in the cloakroom or designated space put aside for groups. Bulky items can cause accidental damage to art works.

We encourage visitors to enjoy the Gallery at a leisurely pace.
To ensure the safety of the art works, and in consideration of other visitors, we ask that movement through the Gallery be orderly and considerate.

Take notes using pencil and paper or notebooks  leave your clipboards, folders and ballpoint or felt-tipped pens in the cloakroom.
Ballpoint and felt-tipped pens contain ink that is difficult to remove from most surfaces. For this reason, we require students to use pencils in the Gallery.

Visitors may take photographs of the building and the permanent Collection without a flash or tripod.
The Gallery maintains a controlled environment where the atmosphere and light levels are regulated to prolong the physical life of the Collection. Taking flash photographs is not permitted because the light can rapidly increase the rate of deterioration of art works.  Visitors may take non-flash photographs of the buildings and of the permanent Collection for private research and study only.  The use of photographic devices is not permitted in travelling exhibitions.  This includes digital cameras and mobile telephones.  If you are unsure as to whether or not a work is owned by the Gallery, please ask a Gallery Services Officer.  Postcards and posters of some works are available from the Gallery Store.

We encourage people to stay a metre away from the art.
Art works are very fragile and can be permanently damaged by even the gentlest touch. When someone touches the surface of an art work, their fingers deposit skin greases and salts which can, over time, cause damage. Sometimes a viewer may want to point to share something that has caught their interest. If they are too close, an accidental touch will damage and eventually destroy the very art that excited the visitor in the first place.

Food and drink is not allowed inside the Gallery.
Bring your lunch and eat in the parklands outside the Gallery and along the river bank.  Alternatively, the River Café is a self service cafeteria on the park level of GoMA and offers fast service and healthy options for families and groups.  Picnic rugs are available for hire.  The Foyer Café is licensed and offers table service and a modern menu based around fresh, seasonal produce.   At QAG, the Watermall Café is counter service and specialises in tempting treats for afternoon tea.
Contact the Cafes to make a group booking.
