Through interactive opportunities, the Gallery creates a welcoming environment for children aged 0-8 years. Resources for early childhood audiences are developed to assist educators to provide meaningful Gallery visits for young children. Focusing on the Gallery's Collection, the resources build on young children's interests, prior knowledge and experiences to stimulate their curiosity about art.
Curriculum-specific exhibition information is provided for teachers to engage young children with contemporary and historical works in the Gallery's collections. Using the Early Years Curriculum Guidelines as a framework, Gallery staff can provide practical ways for teachers to link Collection displays and current exhibitions to their classroom program.

The Arts Years 1 to 10 Syllabus recognises the importance of learning outside the classroom, in environments such as art galleries and museums. As children develop skills and understanding, learning opportunities expand beyond personal experience and perceptions. By introducing them to contemporary and historical art works from Australia and around the world, children begin to consider the broader community and cultures beyond their own.
Programs and exhibitions encourage children to respond to ideas and art-making through active learning. Interactive installations, specially designed labels, artist-run workshops, performances, activity books, festivals and guided tours are presented for school groups and family visitors. These interactive, fun and challenging programs encourage children to engage with processes of creating art works and the concepts involved in exhibitions.
All programming for children, families and school audiences ― including programs that occur on weekends and school holidays ― is underpinned by the visual arts curriculum. Other syllabus areas also inform the Gallery's programs, including the Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) syllabus and other strands of the arts syllabus.

The Queensland Art Gallery plays an important role in the acquisition, conservation and development of the state collection for the enjoyment of present and future users. Behind the scenes, conservators work towards preservation, restoration and research of Collection art works for gallery display and travelling exhibitions.
For the professional development of school leavers, ‘Behind the scenes at the Gallery’ group tours provide insight into the methods and motives for the preservation of art works in a state collection. Visit with staff from Conservation and Framing. Hear about methods and techniques that are important in the various fields of museum work, and engage with art on a new level. Please note these tours are open to year 11 and 12 students only (groups of 10 students maximum).
Through a variety of programs developed specifically for students and academics, tertiary programs at the Gallery provide a critical platform to explore current arts issues. The Gallery supports an active relationship with tertiary institutions to stimulate discussion and continue to participate in the growth of critical practices by Queensland students.
Programs such as New Wave stimulate engagement across universities, including exhibition previews, forums and lectures.
