Conceptualism in Brisbane

15 November 2003 - 9 May 2004
Collection display
Gallery 13

Conceptual and 'post-conceptual' art has been an important strand of contemporary art in Brisbane over the past 25 years.

This display features works by prominent Australian contemporary artists, including Robert MacPherson, Peter Tyndall, John Nixon, Peter Cripps and Scott Redford, who have all lived, worked or exhibited in Brisbane.

These works question the theory and making of twentieth-century art, but since the artists are Australian, the answers to these questions are often ironic, inflected by Australian vernacular culture. Relationships between images and text are a major preoccupation, and the status of the viewer is often explored.

The Queensland Art Gallery holds video documentary of the artist talks given by Scott Redford and Peter Tyndall in March 2004. Please contact the Research Library to arrange a viewing.
