In 2001 the Queensland Art Gallery presented a major retrospective exhibition of work by eminent landscape painter William Robinson. Recently, the Gallery was honoured to be the recipient of a gift from the artist in the form of seven exquisite pastels he made in 2001.
Robinson has experimented with the pastel medium throughout his career and has recently refocused his interest in this medium. Noted for his finely detailed application of oil paint in his panoramic landscapes, the artist's use of pastel on these smaller works seems ideally suited to his mark-making on a more intimate scale. The discrete placing of the individual strokes of pastel contributes to the romantic, almost 'embroidered' quality of each work.
