In the early 1970s at the remote settlement of Papunya in Central Australia, a local school teacher encouraged elders of the area to use board, canvas and paint to record their traditional stories and ceremonial designs. From this beginning emerged the Western Desert dot-painting movement ― one of the most important developments in Australian art.
Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri (c.1934-2002) was a pioneer and 'star' of this movement; a charismatic ambassador for his culture whose work revolutionised the way the art of Indigenous peoples was perceived worldwide. This major retrospective exhibition honours his contribution to Australian art, and features work from throughout the three decades of his career.
