White/Light

23 October 2004 - 13 March 2005
Admission free Gallery 3 & Watermall

In most cultures white is special, significant and richly inflected. Contemporary artists use white and its intimate connection with light to hint at the boundaries between the physical world, visual perception and a sense of the ecstatic.

Shades of white and nuances of light are explored in this display through works from the Gallery's Collection by Judith Wright, Tim Johnson, Bea Maddock and N.N. Rimzon.

Contemporary minimalist works by Robert Hunter, Howard Taylor and Dorothea Rockburne also feature, along with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama's magnificent Narcissus garden 1966/2002. Many will remember this major work, with its 2000 stainless steel balls floating in the Watermall, as a centrepiece work of the Gallery's 'Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' in 2002.
