Drawn from the Gallery’s collection of contemporary photography, ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ features artists who explore the ambiguous territory between reality and disguise in self-portraits. Some artists exploit stereotypes, playfully performing the designated role. With costumes, artificial lighting and sets, these artists emphasise the theatrical and explore the ways in which we all, to some extent, adopt different personas. Others create images that directly challenge particular ideals. In these works the artist becomes a film director, moulding and shaping the image presented. The display includes the work of artists Fiona Foley, Tracey Moffatt and Luke Roberts (Australia), Greg Semu (New Zealand), Yasumasa Morimura (Japan), and Cindy Sherman (United States).
